Yeah, I could show you a million dings on my TV from my shoe when Chris Matthews spewed some false equivalence or let a spokesdroid lay a steming, uh, lie right across the plexiglass desk without a protest.
But every now and then, Mr. Matthews remembers the name of his show and puts the hammer down on some weasel-load of talking points. And tonight, his surprised victim was none other than the greasiest weasel that ever climbed the back-scratching ladder of Georgia Republican politics, Rep. Jack Kingston.
There to convince viewers that Donald Trump’s “foreign policy” speech was somehow legit, Kingston led with visions of Reagan, which must have hit a nerve in Matthews, who leaned into the congresscritter and said (I paraphrase), “You keep saying Reagan was tough. I was on the plane, I know how Carter reacted. The Iranians got nothing from him. They got TOW missiles from Reagan. Reagan did the deal, so he’s the tough guy?”
Kingston tried another talking point and Matthews cut him off, “Don’t change the subject, just answer the question.”
I know the Carter admin is a personal subject with Matthews, but seeing someone in the media go straight up against the Gipper hagiography with cold facts and a refusal to let the issue lie...
It’s not all that often, but every now and then I remember why I watch the guy. That is all.
