One of the first things a dictator does is war on truth. It is easy for Trump to do this because truth has been under attack for the last 20 years and it has jived nicely with the overall dumbing down of America and ginning up of hate. We have the Republican Party, the Alt-right press like Breitbart, the Christofascists, and of course Fox News, to thank for creating an army of willing right wing nutjobs delightfully eager to follow the basest, vilest public personality this county has ever hatched.
The Democratic Party, reasonable press, rational independents, moderate churches, and those few sane and moral Republicans have all failed to kill the serpent in the egg.
Last night that serpent cracked open his egg and slithered out.
Throughout the course of Donald Trump’s chilling quest for the White House, we have been witness to his repeated attacks on just about everything and everyone: women, blacks, Mexicans, Muslims, the disabled, and war heroes (even the Gold Star family of a fallen hero), the press, politicians of every stripe (including his own), corporations, foreign nations, past presidents, the current president, and of course reason, justice, and human decency. We’ve heard him incite violence at his rallies, throw out dog whistles about assassinating his political foe, and war on anyone who dares not genuflect before him. Last week the The New York Times published 273 examples of this deranged man’s slanderous tweets. Tweeting personal attacks is a past-time for this monster. As if we needed any more proof of his narcissism, delusions of grandeur, and sense of kingly entitlement, we now have in the public domain a leaked video tape of his admission that he’s a sexual predator who feels it is his right to grab women in the crotch and kiss them against their will… and you can use your imagine to assume what else.
Yet ALL of THIS ABOVE is but nothing compared to what America and the world witnessed last night. Forget that his defense of his own indefensible actions was to stir up the past fogs belonging to a man who is not even running for president and also use a woman who has a truly troubled mind and conflates her rapist’s court appointed defense counsel with her rapist… all that was just more red meat for his salivating, snarling dogs. Forget that even in his viciousness, he cannot stay on track and control his incoherence. In the middle of one of his repeated ad hominem attacks on Hillary Clinton he digressed into a completely incoherent muddle of utter nonsense about ISIS and Syria. If he weren’t so grotesquely venal he might just be an astonishing joke, one that sometimes makes Sarah Palin look intelligent.
However, the real story last night was that in the midst of multitudinous lies delivered to elicit Shock and Awe and destroy his opponent, Trump did one thing he never does:
TRUMP FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH.
Last night there could be no one who is a student of history or trained in law who could not have gasped out loud when Trump proudly announced he was going to appoint to a Special Prosecutor to go after Hillary Clinton because he wanted her “in jail.”
There it was, for all to see: Donald Trump’s vision of a fascist presidency; a presidency where the person in power can wage war on political enemies with hate-filled relish.
Trump is not the genius Adolph Hitler was; not even close. Trump couldn’t even write his own biography for God’s sake; he needed a ghostwriter to just tell his own story so he could never produce an epic opus like Mein Kampf. Trump also doesn’t possess Hitler’s oratorical skill; quite obviously he can’t even string together more than 6 coherent sentences at a time but since his followers are more interested in hate than style it matters not.
But what he said last night spoke volumes enough… it was a glimpse into the Mein Kampf of his mind.
If America elects this monster, then democracy and civil liberties are going to be on hold until he is impeached or defeated at the end of his term… but in the meantime, the reign of terror that he will unleash will be unprecedented in our history… and I’m being somewhat optimistic, predicating this on the assumption that we will survive long enough to overthrow or toss him out. It may not be that easy.
As I said in my opening sentence, one of the first things a dictator does is war on truth but this doesn’t mean that every now and then they don’t accidentally tell you the truth.
Last night Donald Trump finally told us the truth.
